“Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.” (Proverbs 16:20, ESV)
Here is a key rule for life – Think Deeply and Regularly upon the WORD of God! He gives us the promise that His Word IS life, and though it may feel dark and obscure at times, it is always worth the effort. There is never a time and never a place where God’s Word does not give us what it promises. The Word IS a lamp to our feet and light to our path (Psalm 119.105) and that basic good cannot be removed from it. It is intrinsic to its very nature; part of what it actually IS!! We may not always feel like we understand just what God is saying to us, but when we dwell on it, meditating on it… when we deeply and regularly contemplate just what God has said, we learn to discern the shape of the promised good. It can be a slow process, and might feel like we walk miles to gain inches; but progress WILL BE made, and progress IS made… and gloriously, that progress is that the truth of God’s word becomes steadily more discernable. The blank stares of incomprehension, the spinning wheels of confusion yield slowly but inexorably to the renewal and rewriting of our minds. (Romans 12.2). Each new pathway adds strength, cohesion and clarity to the rest – God grants us wisdom, understanding and perspective… and here is the best possible news – God Himself is ultimately THE good that we discern. The Father hides in the Word of Truth, waiting to be revealed by the Truth of the Word. Our interaction with the Word then IS interaction with God Himself! He WILL speak to us when we honor His Word! Our position MUST be that of Samuel “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.” (1 Samuel 3.9-10).
God will always speak to those who listen, He will always tell us what He is doing through us and for us if we are listening. He has promised to give us what we NEED to understand…
““For the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken; who can but prophesy?”” (Amos 3:7–8, ESV)
